Innovative Gum Treatments

Oral care is important not only for teeth and gums but for the health of the entire body. An unhealthy mouth is connected to diabetes and cardiovascular problems, inflammatory and auto-immune diseases and premature labor in pregnant women. Those who have pre-existing systemic illness are at even higher risk for serious health problems.

SIGNS OF UNHEALTHY GUMS

An easy way to test the health of gums is by simply flossing. If the action draws blood, there is likely gingivitis or possibly progressed gum disease. While gingivitis is relatively easy to reverse, a more serious case of gum disease is not, and it will influence long-term health if not treated.

TREATING GUM PROBLEMS WITH LASERS

One of the major goals of gum therapy is to decrease the periodontal pocket. The larger the pocket, the easier it is for plaque and bacteria to hide and cause problems. One innovative way to treat the gums is with a diode laser. A laser light at the right frequency promotes circulation allowing oxygen and other healthy nutrients to get to the area that needs it. We have found that using the laser as an adjunct to the traditional methods of cleaning the pockets shows improved results than the traditional methods alone.

The condition of the mouth has a large impact on the rest of the body. Interrupting the gum disease process early on will lead to a higher quality of life. Click here to set up an appointment with Dr. Patelzick.
