Gum Lift and Controuring
A gum lift is a procedure where excess tissue is removed through shaping and contouring the gums. It is performed through the use of a diode laser that sculpts the gums and transforms the smile. The treatment is quick and painless and gives great results.
Symptoms of Needing a Gum Lift
Those who seek a gum lift are dealing with excess gum tissue due to the following reasons:
- Teeth appearing too small with a very gummy appearance while smiling
- Experiencing excess gum tissue due to hormonal changes or from wearing braces
- Gum overgrowth as a side effect of medication
The Gum Lift Procedure
The dentist will first take digital photos of the teeth and smile along with gum measurements to determine how to best achieve the patient’s goals. A diode laser is then used to remove excess gum tissue and give a flattering new shape to the smile, which will appear bigger and brighter. A gum lift is often done in combination with porcelain veneers as part of a smile makeover.
Limitations of a Gum Lift
In some cases, a gum lift will not entirely resolve an excessive gum tissue. The amount of tissue that can be removed with the laser is limited by a patient’s biologic width, which is the amount of gum that is required to surround the teeth to keep a healthy foundation. If a gum problem cannot be resolved through using the laser, other options, such as Botox, are available. The Botox is injected on either side of the patient’s nostrils, which keeps the smile muscles from lifting up too high. This effect lasts for four to six months.
For those who wish to change the shape of their smile, a gum lift and contouring is a quick and easy solution.
